  • Le Hospital. (A Serial.) -Episode 4

Monday: Kick off a brand new day with three visits. My resident doctor a timid man who really felt absolutely horrible about what was going on, so much so that he tried to high-five me and then gave up half way through and awkwardly shook my hand. It was cute. Then there was Kevin and Jen my Podiatrists. They are awesome, and feel equally as terrible about my situation partly because they are only a few years older than I and partly because this is all from popping a blister.

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I watched a “special report” on CNN. Which by the way sucks. I hate round the clock news, its a load of bullshit. I like that they report it, but I hate they keep reporting it. And then it just becomes opinion and speculation. Lots and lots of speculation.

“If we amplify everything, we hear nothing”- Jon Stewart.

It was MLK Day and it was quiet. Monday and everyone is back to work. It got very lonely, very quick. Your stuck with books and crosswords, and you start to feel like a cat-lady minus the affection and smell.

But it puts things in perspective. I am unbelievably lucky to even be in this bed in the first place. I am lucky to have the freedom and rights to have this IV in me. And to even be able to post that CNN sucks. So I feel fine, but my ego and id are suffering. It was a perfect day to reflect on such feelings.

So the MRI results come back. And the bottom line is that the infection did not get on my bone or on me achilles tendon. There is, however, an abscess of infectious fluid that has built up on the left side of my heel that needs to be cut open and drained. Which means surgery!

My results from a culture they took of my blood and pus the other day comes back and they say its negative. I’m relieved. It seems as though I’m going have my surgery on Tuesday and because I’m not an emergency I have been put on the add-on list. This means I will be getting the surgery around 5 or after. I can deal with this night surgery on Tuesday, home on Wednesday. Relief has spread through my body faster than that damn cellulitis.

My brother Marky (shameless plug: www.markyconnolly.bandcamp.com/)  and his friend Chris came to visit me and we giggled till almost 1am. It was nice. My brother tends to talk very loudly at times and may have shouted “tatties” more than once.

I went to sleep writing a joke about how China just came out with a commercial on CNN just highlighting everything they’ve accomplished, which is in almost EVERY field. Which really isn’t surprising considering they have 1.3 billion people they are bound to have a couple superior minds. But there was no real purpose for the commercial, because after all the flashes of greatness: technology, space travel, athletics, biology, etc., the end of the commercial just said, “China.” It was just like a flare gun for our psyches, just a little warning saying, “Here we come! We’re China! We’ll own you soon!”

Ever the optimist, I’m able to go to sleep. Knowing I’m being cared for and knowing that everything will soon be over. Especially because Mary, my nurse, lets me know that she is going to play War of Worldcraft on her day off and make sure she gets past her level 5 magic-whatever and dedicates to me. Thanks Mary. Thank you so much. And I sleep even better.

Stay tuned for the next episode of Le Hospital. (A Serial.)!! Will Mary go past level 5 magic-whatever?? Does Luigi come back?? Do I actually go through with the surgery?? And does the trendiest skin disease in 2011 strike me?? Find out in an ALL-NEW episode of…Le Hospital. (A Serial.)!!!!
